Tracey Emin's £1.2M Bed !

Emin confirms she will not make a penny from the sale. She just feels she has to look out for her bed.

"I really care about the bed. I love it. I stand by it. If I could have bought it and given it to the Tate, I would."

I'm not sure if this really is a work of art or not, but if Emin really IS sorry that she can't by it for the nation and The Tate, couldn't she just make another one ? It couldn't cost much surely...an awful lot less than £1.2m !

That's a great deal of money for an unmade bed. Even the 150K that Saatchi originally paid for it seems a lot.

Yee-uch I really, really hope that no-one buys it. Sorry and all that but to me this is a very distasteful con-trick, and I thought so at the time she produced it, - although ten marks for trying!

I have no desire whatsoever to trek up to Town to see her unmade bed, but there are some people who would crawl over broken glass to get a glimpse. So why doesn't she just knock another one up, and save the Tate a huge fortune ? These are hard times and "we are all in this together" apparently, so Emin should pull her finger out and help Britain in its hour of need.

Where is her Dunkirk spirit !

A second one would not have the same impact or 'worth'. Its all about 'the shock of the new'. That first bed was very personal to her,on that basis its desirable for some people.

But pastafreak...if Emin is now such a valued and famous British artist, wouldn't a bed made yesterday be of value as well ? I am sure if Michelangelo had painted another ceiling just like the Sistine Chapel one, people would be flocking to see that one as well ! I just want her to pull her finger out and help Britain in its hour of need !

I went to the Tate modern a few years ago.

I walked in one small gallery and there was a workman's trestle table with some wallpaper and paint and a paint brush lying on it. A half drunk mug of tea, a partly read newspaper and a ladder leaning against the wall. That was all that was in the room

I thought they had got the decorators in, but then noticed a museum attendant sitting in the corner "guarding" the art, and realised this trestle table and all the rubbish lying around it was the exhibit.

What a con.

I can remember a time when artists had some talent.

I walked into exactly the same room at the Tate VHG ! Wow, what a coincidence !

I too felt like you and laughed uproariously when the "guard" confirmed that it was an exhibition, not a building site. I wondered what he was there to guard...perhaps they thought that the Thermos or the old copy of The Sun was in danger of being pilfered ! Not sure when that was... about 10 years ago I think.

But the building itself, the old Bankside Power Station and the Turbine Hall are worth going to see in their own right. They also had a few Bridgit Rileys there, my favourite modern artist of all time :::

Her colour work is amazing. The pictures literally "swim" in front of your eyes.
I would recommend that you get to see some Rileys if you ever have the chance. Now there is a Modern Artist of real worth !

Just a trestle table? That's nothing. I went to the Tate once and saw a full scale replica of a house.

why would an artist make the same work twice? Van Gogh had to keep painting sunflowers because he couldn't afford models (same reason why Rembrandt did self-portraits). But you'd hardly catch Leonardo thinking "That Mona Lisa looks nice, I'll bang out a few more of them." Emin's moved on to other work.

I've seen The Bed and liked it. Don't like Damien Hirst's stuff though.

Tracy Emin's reasonably local to us, she was on TV the other night saying that she'd had to get into The Bed again recently, because the duvet didn't look right.....

Believe me (and you probably wont), but the real artist behind all of this nonsense is non other than Charles Saatchi himself. He's bamboozled everyone including poor lacklustre Tracey, and made a personal fortune in so doing.

mikey, some of it is in the Guardian piece you linked to. If you compiled a list of beds in art, this would be one of them. Obviously, there's no point in comparing it with paintings, as it's 3D, so you'd be better seeing it as a kind of sculpture; nonetheless it draws on a history of 2D art, while it also stands as a representation of a whole way of life: booze, fags, sex. And Jones's comparison with Van Gogh's "portrait" of his chair is apt: a person is depicted via his/her possessions. So think of it as a self-[portrait without the self, like a painting of the artist's studio.

Van Gogh painted sunflowers because he wanted to, and Rembrandt's self-portraits ditto. The reason for painting self-portraits is very complex, and not a poor substitute for painting from a model.

Thanks jno...its all clear now ! But I still would rather have a Bridget Riley hanging on my wall, than a Emin un-made bed cluttering up my living room.

Still can't understand though, why she can't help the nation out in its hour of need and make, or perhaps un-make another bed for the Tate, thus saving them a fortune...it doesn't look very difficult.
