Watching an episode of the Sweeney the other day and Regan came out with the term "Peter" when refferring to a safe. Now I'm normally pretty good at figuring out Rhymming slang but I haven't a scooby (scooby doo, clue!) with this one, any ideas?? I have Googled and found lots about rhymming slang but nothing about this one. Thanks

this is what i have found on the net..

Peter Pan ................Can (which means prison or wall safe)

 hope this helps

Hello Loosehead, believe it is underworld speak rather than rhyming slang.

A few examples are "The creep" for a night time burglar; "drum" house therefore "drummer" for house burglar. A screwmans chandler is a burglars toolmaker. "Blagger" is a wagesnatcher."Peter" is a safe and a peterman is a safecracker. Tom is a prostitute. Whizzer is a pickpocket. Bogeys, screws, grasses for police, prison officer and informer. I'm sure you can think of a few more. Hope this helps.

peter...salt peter...st peter...keys to the kingdom....keys...safe.
I think you'll find it is called a peter after the locksmith Peter Chubb which is also the slang for a prison cell because you are locked in it and why in my opinion safecrackers are called petermen.
