They've no cayenne pepper, what can I replace it with? Chilli powder?

I need fennel as well which they haven't got!

And I need a blade of mace! grrrrr. Will the ground stuff do?

Thanks :)

Found some cayenne stuffed at the back :)
Try eye of newt and leg of frog, sounds all very medieval to me.
yes. Chilli powder. You should find fennel seeds in the herb section which you could to your dish for taste. Ground mace is ok providing you can work out how much is equivalent to a blade. Bon apetit
Hi rocky....Sorry I missed you for a quickie in Tesco's.

Anyway, whilst a bit late perhaps,...Chilli powder can be used as a replacement for Cayenne Pepper, from which Chilli powder is made. Cayenne is hotter than Chilli; which has been 'softened' by the addition of other ingredients , such as garlic, paprika etc.

In place of Fennel you can use Dried Dill, Celery, onion, and/or garlic.

I am yet to find anywhere that sell 'blades of mace'. Mace is the waxy outer covering of the Nutmeg and is bought as a dry powder (blade mace) and looks and smells like ground Nutmeg; which can be used to substitute Mace.

I get the feeling that you are cooking a very tasty dish. If it's for this evening, I shall have to decline any invite which you might give to me, because I had a tooth taken out this morning. Anyway, I would be interested to know what is the meal you are preparing.

Lol, believe it or not I'm trying a recipe for home made brown sauce. I managed to find some cayenne tucked away at the back of a shelf and bought some ground mace, I'm going to go with half a tsp of that as I've no idea what it tastes like or how it will affect the end result.

The fennel was for a tomato ketchup recipe, not sure the seeds would taste the same, what do you think?

Thanks for all your help
Hi again rocky......Yes, fennel seeds should be ok in the recipe. I often use dried seeds if I haven't available the actual fresh ingredient. One which I often put in soups is Celery seed; which doesn't even come from the named plant :-

Thanks Hans.

The brown sauce came out very well, next time I'll up the vinegar a bit and not put so much sugar in as it's a tad too sweet for me. An excellent recipe though.
I also searched 3 supermarkets last week for Cayenne pepper as I was making cheese scones. None to be found anywhere - wonder why? so I used paprika instead. Good tip thanks Hans to use chilli powder instead, I shall remember that!
Please could you get me a Tesco's Fajita chicken wrap while your there. I love them and my local store has run out.
