my laptop wasn't accepting my password so as the only computer administrator i went into the system restore/reboot. i had 3 options and the one i chose said it was non-destructive and would save all the files i had into another file on the computer, while setting all other settings back to as if i'd just brought the laptop. now i have it up and running again how do i find the file with all my other stuff in? it's not in my documents or my pictures, can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Might be worth looking in Start/Computer/Recovery(D)
Try running a wildcard search (with an asterisk instead of a file name) for each type of file that you're looking for. For example, searching for *.jpg will find all jpeg images on your computer. Looking for *.doc will find all Word files (unless they were created in Word 2007 or later, in which case search for *.docx).

Is there a separate partition (recovery partition) to look in.
Explore with Windows Explorer.

Possible re-install, have you got a folder called 'Windows old'.

If so, you may find your files in there.
