Why in the 1980's did do many British bands/singers sing with an American accent, like Def Leppard, Go West, and Robert Palmer?

I wouldn't say def leppards joe elliott sang with an american accent.
I wouldnt say that any of them sang with an american accent - in fact accents are usually lost when singing.
I know what you mean, and it drives me crazy. It still goes on today with the likes of Busted and McFly. Shane Richie and Brian Conley are also big offenders and it's sooooo cringeworthy!
Aargh, and that Cornish Joss girl TALKS with an American accent.
