Humane Way Of Deterring Slugs?
7 Answers
I've heard of the salt torture and the beer-drowning methods but i) don't want to be needlessly cruel; ii) don't want to clear up the mess afterwards, so does anyone have any tips for deterring slugs at all from coming indoors? I'm not sure if it's the weather but the last couple of months I've been plagued by the things coming indoors through gaps and even the cat flap. They seem to be attracted to cat food and I'm forever chucking bowls of it away each morning. Tried the copper tape idea but it doesn't seem to have worked at all. Any humane suggestions?

And they are coming in for your cat food so you have to remove it when you go to bed and any bowl of water you leave out. Also do not leave any other food out and don't leave dishes in your sink with food scraps on because they will climb up and to get it and you will see slime marks across your work surfaces. You have to remove what is attracting them. Oh, and make sure your rubbish bin lid is on tight. Good luck.
We had a similar problem in our last house. The kitchen was rectangular and slugs were coming in through the gaps under the work units.
All we did was put a big line of salt into the gaps to create a barrier that they couldn't cross.
You couldn't see the salt as it was slightly under the unit, in the gap and we never found any dead slugs, so no mess. I'm guessing they could detect the salt and turned back from it.
Problem solved - hope you solve your's too :)

They have been driving me insane!! We have 3 cats who (of course!) need 3 bowls, giving the slugs a large area to infest. After trying all the usual methods, it occurred to me that the slugs only come out at night!! I now have a small low energy reading type light just over the bowls - turn it on at night and off in the morning (I'm saving up for a timer switch!!). Seems to work completely. Perhaps I've got a colony of hungry slugs hiding and waiting for mealtimes, but who cares??
