Last year I had to dig up my lovely purple lavendar as it was old,I replaced with two new ones but they are pale blue and very long.What name would I look for to get a purple one with shorter stems .

There are many different varieties, blackfish, and they are all different. Woof's link is a good place to start!
PS - Before digging one up next time, you can always take cuttings. I've done that with great success, they root really easily (all I did was break off a suitable stem and stuff it in a pot. Rooted really quickly!).
