I spent my childhood not far from that mill at Styall and it wasn't always night, the sun shone sometimes. The only light relief seemed to be the tying of a piece of cotton to the foreman's coat-tail.
Oh dear! I was hoping, like Dickens, there might be a few lighter moments.
The history was good though, making a connection to the contemporary abolition of slavery in the USA was interesting.
Fortified by a large scotch, I'll perhaps give it another whirl next week.
