Pilonidal Cyst

Has anyone had one of these? I am waiting to see the consultant and then surgery. I am not looking forward to the surgery and may decline it! I don't think I will be sitting down for a while and the bike will definitely be out!!
I need some re-assurance please! Ruthie xx

Yes my friend's son has had one for some time. He is a very hairy guy. He got his operation about 2-3 years ago but things went awry (hope that hasn't put you off). However got another operation 2 months ago and it has been a complete success. The recovery and recuperation (for him) was worse than the operation. Please read all the information you can (internet is good) and then decide if it is for you. JJCon

Thanks jennyjoan. Most of my problem is that I have read too much about in a leaflet from the doctor. It's not very painful and not there constantly so I may say no to surgery. Hope your son has now fully recovered.Rx

ruthie, my ex-husband had one. Not a pleasant operation, and as jj says, the recovery was quite painful and took a while. He was fine afterwards though. This took place some 40 years ago, mind you - and hopefully procedures will have improved over those years!

i think if a doctor has given you a leaflet about the surgery, it's best to read it. !

My son had one about twenty years ago. Some discomfort post op but not laid low with pain and it was a complete success and has not recurred.

ruthie, I don't know what the differences between "pilonidal cyst/sinus",but anyway I had the latter"pilonidal sinus" done in 1962,i was 23 at the time,and ive never looked back,i was quiet painful after the opp,because they used what they called "anchor stitches" from cheek to cheek if you follow what I mean, made sleeping a problem when you tried to turn over,but im sure they have come a long way since 1961 and may use a different method,as I remember it healed up quickly and I don't recall having more than 7/8 days off work, as a bus driver good luck

My daughter had her op a few years ago ruthie. The district nurse called everyday to change her dressing. The "hole" was packed with seaweed based swabs,iodine? she slept on her tummy to ease the pain. Good luck!

I had "one of these" back in 1972. Very uncomfortable but not a long recovery. Went back to work after 6 weeks. As I said that was in 1972 - I must imagine that procedures have greatly improved since then. I have never had a recurrence. Go for it Ruthie !! Wishing you well.

Thanks fbg40. My main problem is that I don't heal very well as I have Diabetes and the healing process tends to slow down with having that. Rx

Knockavacca -I will be having the same op as you. A cyst is where there is no external opening whereas a sinus one has an opening. Will keep you informed. Ruthie x
