Odd Pains In Cardiac Patient

A friend of mine has been ill with hypertension, left and right heart failure, atrial fibrillation and angina for a number of years. He's also had a couple of minor heart attacks. He suffers from retching and nausea on rising from bed every morning.

When he experiences the retching and vomiting, he knows his blood pressure has risen as he becomes flushed and can feel his heart pounding. This normally passes off in a few minutes. However, recently he's been experiencing throbbing pain on both sides of his lower back and at the back of his neck during these episodes. The throbbing is in unison at all three places the same time. Although, the pain passes off in about 3-4 minutes, it's frightening the life out of him.

Can anyone suggest what this might be? Thank you

My first thought is that the throbbing pains after "retching" may well musculo-skeletal, a sort of abnormal activity in the spine and it's associated musculature..........and I still believe that this is the probable caused.

My second thought was ...."why is he nauseous and retching in the morning?"

I bet he is also on statins.

Well, that is my contribution...........muscular problems causing the pain.

He is presumably under the care of a Cardiologist and /or GP so it might be a good idea to seek an opinion.

I understand that the retching is due to the liver cirrhosis and something called asites(?) that he suffers from. He's on something called lansoprazole 30mg each morning for this, but it's not very effective.

He'd definetily not on any form of statin. He's told me this evening that he's afraid he has something called an aortic aneurism as his dad suddenly dropped dead from the condition a few years ago.

He's due to see his cardiologist at the end of the month.

Well, that did occur to me........but unlikely.

From your second post, which is more informative, your friend is a very ill man, but my initial opinion re. his pain, remains the same.

I think he should go for Angiography. Angiography report will clear whether the problem is cause of blockage or something else.
