Can anyone recommend a handheld GPS for going for walks and finding your way back to where you started? I'm looking for one about 50 pounds. I want a simple one, not with lots of complicated functions. Thanks

Thank you Zacs, unfortunately that's too much money. I did see some mini ones from about 20 to 50 pounds, but don't know if they'll be any good. I don't mind second hand. Thanks

You need to pay around £200 for anything trustworthy. Personally I still prefer 1:25000 OS maps.

No maps or other complications - just 'mark' where you start from and track your way back.

Thanks very much all. (I haven't got a smartphone). What about a Garmin eTrex 10 Outdoor Handheld GPS Unit. What is the defence between that, and a receiver? Thanks

For "Defence", read "Difference"

The E10 is a receiver (of satellite signals of course) and should be fairly good but it is only black and white and doesn't have OS maps on it.

So, if it doesn't say it's a receiver, then it's got maps in it. Is that right? And can you put your own maps on to a receiver? I don't know anything about GPSs. I'm asking this question for someone else, who also knows nothing about GPSs. Thanks

No you can out maps on a receiver and they work with the satellite signal (clever eh!). If you read thru this it will tell you more:
