Been told I should not be using them. What do you do? Find trying to read with any less light makes my eyes sore.

The low energy bulbs take time to warm up, and contain harmful chemicals (mercury?) requiring careful disposal. The light is of low quality.

LED lights are getting cheaper, and are a good replacement for tungsten - their long life and cool running temperature are big plusses, too
