If it was a ghost trying to get nearer the stage, why didn't it move a chair at the front?

Spooky, the chair could have been pushed back for the ghost to leave the theatre.

The answer's obvious when you think about it. The show the ghost was watching must have been dire and it was getting up to walk out in protest.
