Quote from http://enjoyment.independent.co.uk/Food-and-Drink/news/a rticle160473.eceManchester tart breadcrumb and jam-filled pastry, topped with meringue as a glamorous tribute to Queen Victoria when she visited the city should "be devoured immediately",
According to a New Zealand cookbook:-
It originated, as the name suggests, in Manchester, England, though initially it came without the glamorous meringue topping. That was added for the visit of Queen Victoria, as the local, working class dessert with its breadcrumbs was thought too humble.
