Medicines That Increase Appetite.

Common side effect of some drugs is increased aappetite and therefore weight gain. If the increased appetite can be resisted does this result in weight loss ie if you feel constantly hungry but maintain a normal calorie intake, does the body think it's not being fed so starts using its fat reserves?

Squad, you arnt aware of medications that have a side effect of weight gain and you dont know it? Is that it?
Tell me if I'm wrong...(just guessing here)
a) you're a retired gp?
b)youre not up to date with recent medical research?
c)youve certainly got no compassion for people with mental health disorders....stiff upper lip and all that?....if youve put on weight then its not your medication, its the fact that your a greedy, glutenouse pudding.
d) im a doctor and I know better than you know yourself.

I am underweight and was told by my GP there are 3 medications they often prescribe to help increase appetite
1. Steroids (my GP decided against this due to the bone thinning effect)
2. A cannabis based drug ( can't remember the name) often prescribed to cancer/hiv patients. My GP decided against this as it can go either way - either increase the appetite OR completely suppress it
3. Mirtapazine. This is an anti depressant and the most common side effect is increased appetite and wight gain. I've been trying this one out for 4 weeks and have managed to gain 2 kg in weight.

Sqad, you're wrong. I worked in a psychiatric hospital and the side effect to many of the medications was increased appetite.

My own grandmother was put on anti depressants to increase her appetite when she'd stopped eating (she has dementia) and they worked.

I did indeed put the word COMMONLY in capital letters......the psychiatric drugs that have been mentioned may well be "commonly" used.............but not by ALL doctors.
