Hi we have a mercedes sprinter van which is emitting smoke when stationery. It does not happen all the while. It has been to two garages, had oil changed, filters changed, been on diagnostic, exhaust checked but no answers. Does anyone have any idea as it is getting costly keep going back to garages.
yeah, what is the mileage? did it start smoking of a sudden or has it been getting more smokey? Does the oil need topping up often? Maybe a faulty sensor - lambda sensor or even coolant temperature sensor. What did the diagnostic throw up? any lights on the dash?
Have you started using Supermarket fuels?
When did it start?
After a service etc?
I take it it's derv?
Does it black smoke on Labouring? ( going up a hill) is so, Injectors.
thanks all that have replied Injectors have been changed been on diagnostic twice not showing anything at all changed oil filter etc. Doesn't always smoke just now and again which is wierd we changed a faulty brake light switch and also replaced clutch switch as was told that can sometimes cause probs. Went to another garage this aft for diagnostic and told nothing wrong with engine but could need new gear box don't quite like could do as he wasn't sure. He based this on he took it for a test drive up the road and said he thought the gears made a noise. It does need new viscoss fan though so wondering if that might be the problem so going to get that and see what happens
I will check that out. The fan is fine apparantely and does not need changing so much for the diagnostic. It is really wierd as they couldn't find anything wrong again. They did say there was nothing wrong with the engine and were baffled. We have tried different fuel and since using that is not smoking so much just a little bit now and again and it clears in no time.
