A weedkiller containing Glyphosate, such as B&Q own brand is neutralised when it comes into contact with soil. It is then broken down by soil bacteria, over about the next seven days. It is sprayed onto leaves and stems where it is absorbed, and taken into the plant, so it must be used on a day when there will be no rain for at least four hours. In the plant  it inhibits chlorophyl production, therefore the weed will take about two weeks to start to look sick, as it starves to death. The dead weeds can be dug into the soil without fear of damaging future crops.
Impret-Sir - is correct. I use sodium chlorate , which I buy in liquid form ( it's cheaper) but 1 bottle is enough to do an airfield!!
Easier than breaking your back and quicker.
Good luck
