OK, so it will cost the West something extra, but why does Russia think it is clever to ban food imports as surely this can only hurt themselves?

Given that in 2013 the EU's agricultural exports to Russia were worth €11.8bn (£9.4bn), while the US says its food and agricultural exports amounted to $1.3bn (£77m) just where does Russia expect to get all that food from all of a sudden? Surely it has to mean rations or people going without allover Russia?

The flights ban I get, the food one seems very odd.

Usual posturing, Russia can only hurt themselves this way, cold war mark 2.
No one.

It will be bad for both economies.
Perhaps he ( Medvedev ) is just trying to create unrest amongst the general populace. I imagine that the average Russian will blame the West for the lack of food, and not their own Government, thus creating a large anti-West attitude which could be of benefit to him.
