Why do local authorities think they can assume they can arbitrarily take sides?

// Why do local authorities think they can assume they can arbitrarily take sides? // Because they're often run by self important tw4ts who forget that they're just there to organise the bin collections and make sure the street lights work.

Town Halls flew flags for Thatcher's passing anf for 9/11, so why not for the 1,500 civilians killed in the Gaza Strip?

I don't think any City/town/county should publicly take sides in a nasty war between neighbouring states, for which we have (for once) steered clear of. George Galloway is an idiot of the first order, he is only trying to keep his bread and butter happy (slimy b'stard). Warsi is an idiot too walking away from her well paid job, but I suspect there is more than the Gaza scuttling her boat.
I think there is a significant difference with the Town Halls flying flags for Mrs Thatcher's passing, Gromit. That is , they flew the Union flag, the national flag of the United Kingdom, the country in which the Town Halls are situated and the country of which Lady Thatcher was a reasonably successful Prime Minister for twelve years.
Local authorities should not involve themselves in international disputes. (Their argument that they are showing sympathy with those killed holds no water or they would fly the flags of both nations, regardless of the relative numbers of casualties). Such disputes are somewhat beyond their remit which extends to emptying the bins, filling in potholes and running their often none too brilliant schools. It may not have occurred to them that not all of their good burghers may like to see foreign flags flying over their local Town Hall.

It is a foreign war Gromit, people on both sides are fighting and dying, we should Not be taking sides in this by flying flags to indicate their stance. Others may not agree with them and start flying Israeli flags and so it goes on..... like flouncing out of a job (stupid woman Warsi). Let them sort out their problems.
