Anybody with an ounce of brains could see this coming. We were warned about this sort of thing, and I personally warned everybody here on AB. This is the thin end of the wedge. All these privatisations have ended in tears before bedtime. Those who voted for the Party that brought all this about......I hope you are satisfied now.

we now get two deliveries most days - one by Royal Mail, one by TNT. As you can imagine, we're close to a big city. Bad luck to those who aren't.

In Canada we've always, as far as I can remember, only had one delivery per day: I imagine this keeps the cost down. We pay 85 cents, which is about 46 pence, for a first class stamp. What do you pay?

It started years ago. I remember when the post used to come before work and there would sometimes be a second delivery later, whereas for at least the last five years the post has been coming in the afternoon.
But most of the post isn't worth waiting for- it's mainly junk mail. 30 odd years ago I used to write several letters a week to friends and family and pay all sort of bills by post. Now I do it all by phone, email or online

Hopkirk's half right, but outfits like TNT seem to be doing okay anyway. The problem lies with whoever allowed the RM's rivals to cherrypick what should be a public service. (I'm not sure it was the Tories, though.)

This is not really pertinent to the thread; however, I always thought if sort of amusing that your system is the "Royal Mail" yet you call the items in it "post", and when you send something you "post" it. Our system is "Canada Post" and the items in it are called "Mail", and when we send something we "mail" it. See, I told you it wasn't really relevant:)

Business works on supply and demand. If there isn't the demand, there's no profit. Would you rather we, as tax payers subsidise this or would you rather a business provides the service which is necessary?

A cost cutting move, all post boxes I know have one collection a day at around 5pm . Now delivery posties will collect as well which will save time.
But if you want next day delivery with afternoon collection you have to go to a post office or mail centre. The collection service was not protected when Royal Mail was sold, only the daily delivery to every address in the UK was protected. It will be a lot harder to get rid of the daily universal delivery as protection of that was a basic fundamental part of the sale agreement.
