You need to invest in a decent microphone as well as a voice recorder - makes a huge difference.
I used a very good recorder from Sony a few years back ut transferring the data was a three act play (with a juggler at the interval)

Buy an Olympus VN-713PC. It's compact and absolutely brilliant. I bought mine from a Maplin store and it's given me many hours of first-class service. You could check Argos to compare the price.
