learning how to build a website

can anyone give any advise please on how to learn some simple basics on how to build a website.i have read so much my head is in a spin and i am still no wiser,i also downloaded a visual basics programme from microsoft.com but this is obviously for professionals.i really need basics...thank you in anticipation..
