Word And Word Pad

When I save a Word document on my memory stick, and re-open it on my home PC, it appears to have saved it as a Word Pad document, and it advises that it may not be fully supported.

I cut and paste into a Word Document, but the spell checker will not pick up any errors, either on the text I have pasted, or anything I add.

Am I doing something wrong that means my existing document will not save and transfer as a standard Word Document?

What's the file extension of the file saved on your USB stick?

Does your home pc have Microsoft Word and if so which version?
