As for the adults bringing them to the Institute . . . dyslexia runs in families, so there's a good chance that if the kids couldn't read the sign (an unenlightened assumption, of course), than perhaps the parent couldn't either.
My bestfriends' son suffers from a form of dyslexia, wherby he has "coding" difficulties. As I am aware of these specific difficulties I could leave him a note - in which I have changed the letter arrangements to make his life easier. He has well above average I .Q. and fantastic mathematic abilities. However he would have trouble picking out this sign amongst all the other signage in this locale. I am not unenlightened, about the subject matter I have worked with dyslexic and dyspraxic youngsters. I am intrigued by your remarks Diane. I would not generalise that all dyslexics can read anymore than than I would suppose all dyslexics cannot read. I was always taught that to assume made an ass (out of ) u (and) me. Difficulties are personal to the individual concerned, whilst falling under the umbrella of a "dyslexic" diagnosis.
I am a naturally inquisitive person: and also like to make the lives of others, just that little bit, easier wherever this is possible. I don't wait to be asked for help if I can see someone's having a bit of bother accomplishing something. I offer assistance!
I have to say it is not often I agree with Spacechimps sentiments .... but they get three stars for the common sense post - any pre arranged symbol! There was nothing in evidence to this end.
