Boot OS from DVD

is it possible to boot an operating system from a DVD, if so how???

When you install Windows XP, when you first start the install, you are in fact booting from the CD or DVD just to get you going.
There is a version of Linux that boots and runs from CD or DVD, but I cannot remember the name.
