Laptop Battery?

I've read somewhere that if you mostly use your laptop with the mains plug, take out the battery to lengthen its life when you use it as a portable.
Does this affect the laptop in anyway having the battery out of the back for a long time? Dust, etc. getting into the battery compartment?

Charge battery from cold (i.e. before using it) if possible. Once fully charged, unplug from mains.
