I believe they'd sometimes add insult to injury by defecating on the carpet in the homes they were robbing. If caught and questioned about this they'd say they were so frightened they couldn't help themselves.
With DNA now used to secure convictions have the burglars learned to contain themselves?

I believe Tomato ketchup or salad cream from the victims larder is the new calling card substitute.

The gits that got into our house when I was 19 never got as far as leaving a calling card - because I came home from uni early and walked in on them. Was terrifying at the time but it did mean that they had to leave without a lot of our stuff.

I worked in insurance claims for several years and I was surprised that a) this kind of thing actually happened at all and b) so often. Sometimes in a wardrobe, sometimes IN a bed and then the bed re-made.
