I've noticed recently that a LOT of the above seem to do this. I'm talking about small caravan based cafes not Roadchef etc. They are usually George cross flags or union jacks. Anyone have any idea why?

Probably to attract attention and custom.
I'm with Obiter.

A prominent flag flying in a layby is a recognised sign saying "Stop here for a coffee and a burger!" Given that the majority of truckers and motorists are British it makes sense to fly the Union flag (or, in England, St George's Cross), even if the burger van/café is actually run by a Czech or a Pole ;-)
In essence, I suppose, it is not much different from the red light outside a house of ill repute. Both say, "Stop here and sample my wares."
I've had some interesting offers from 'ladies of the night', Obiter, but never "Do you want ketchup on it?"
;-)
Or, "Would you like fries with that?"
Or "I can slip a sausage in for an extra 50p"
I would say why not? Is there any reason not to fly the flag?

I would say why do? Why is there any reason to fly them R1Tora?

I mean, what has flag-waggling patriotism got to do with flogging a few burgers?
It's called advertising.

Who cares?
I should think the flags you mention are more easily available to purchase rather than a custom made 'Fred's Burgers' one.

How are you AP?

Advertising what though?
Who cares? Probably not many - no harm in asking though, is there?
