Chiggers

I hate them. Last week I went into BHS in Gloucester, just got in the door and was descended on by woman collecting for charity. I told her sorry, not today. When I went to till to pay I complained about the fact they were allowed in store. Today went to Lidl, a man was just outside the door collecting for some charity. I told him I objected to being hassled while trying to do my shopping, and could not understand how he had permission to stand at the door and hassle customers. I do my bits for the charities I want to donate to but object to the pressure pt on by chuggers. Any comments folks?

I think you lot are making too much of a fuss. They are doing their best to do some good, you have the option to say, "No thanks". Although I do have some sympathy for them not being allowed inside the store. If you want a decent moan what about the annoying car washers descending on you as you park prior to entering ?

I was once in a town (can't remember which) where there were chuggers every few metres along the high street, and every one of them leapt in front of me with their fake smiles. I had to put my head down and repeat Sorry No until I got through them all.
Another time I walked past one being trained and politely said No I didn't have time to talk about their charity, I had to get back to work. The trainer pointed at me and said loudly "And that is the least rude you'll get."

I rattle cans for several local charities and we're never allowed to rattle them or approach anybody. We just have to stand like statues and let people come to us , if they so wish. Over the years, I've had quite a lot of verbal abuse by some people. If it's an animal rescue charity, I've had " I hate animals, there's more m important things to worry about than bl***y animals". If I collect for cancer research, I've had, "oh why bother, we've all got to die of something". I've even had "no, you just keep all the money for yourself". So, it's a thankless task but it's still VERY annoying to feel bullied into giving.

I too have been a tin collector in the past, and like boxy, I was not allowed to shake the tin in people faces. I relied on my smile, which was always effective ! I used to collect for Ty Havan, a well-known and respected charity here in South Wales and is enthusiastically supported by the overwhelming amount of people. You seem to have had an unfortunate experience Caran, which is sad. But these tin collectors are essential for most charities, and the collectors work very hard.

The chuggers who try to get you to sign up for the Charity do get paid but the tin collectors are entirely voluntary. I am not sure which ones you encountered.

The Christian Aid people always catch me out. A donation envelope will be posted through the letterbox and then a week or so later there will be a knock on the door asking for a donation. I always decline, and then they ask for their envelope back. A frantic hunt then ensues while they stand patiently on the doorstep and eventually I will hand back a tatty envelope which usually has a recipe or a shopping list scribbled on it.
I still won't give them anything.

I'd give the bag packers 50p but until they see that it doesn't do to put the heavy stuff on top of the crushable items I'll pack the bag myself.

I dislike bag packers, I prefer to pack my bags myself and they don't move out the way either when I'm trying to pack, but stay determinedly in my way ! However, I still drop some change in the bucket, I'm not that mean !

I was sitting in a bar once, and this kid came in accompanied, I assume, by his mother and asked me if I'd like to donate to a fund for missing children. The mother gave me a scathing glare when I responded "If the children are missing how will they get my donation...No thanks."
