Got my new car and it's got an electronic parking brake. I don't like it. It feels all wrong and all the doors lock about ten seconds after starting off. Very disconcerting!
Should I be feeling a tug when I start off in first gear and hear a noise?
The parking brake on most V.A.G. cars work via an electric motor which operates through a gear mechanism situated on the calliper and forces the rear pad or pads against the disk.In the event of a power outage the motor will remain as it was at last instruction.
My Audi has got an electric parking brake - it's a doddle to use - certainly easier than a mechanical one - I've had the car for less than a week & already it's second nature.
And before anyone says 'what if it fails?' - I've had the cable snap on mechanical handbrakes - now that is exciting when you're doing a hill start ...
The 'auto door locking' is nothing to do with the electric parking brake - it's a feature of the Central Locking system.
On my Audi you can choose whether to have this happen or not (I quite like it) - I expect you can turn it on/off on the Meriva too - or get the dealer to do it.
My A class Merc has an electronic brake - simple to use but it is positioned under the dash not in the centred console like the VAG vehicles. Bit of a bummer when you have to reach forward when you have bad backwards from
What's wrong with the good old fashioned lever hanbrake - it's worked perfectly well since cars were invented .
Seems to me that manufacturers now are deliberately adding all sorts of electronic thingys , that quite often go wrong , in order that they can sell you an expensive replacement part
No, I didn't have a test drive. I never do. I just go and order the car I want.
I have sorted the brake now, I went back to the garage and they put me right. It just needed a bit of getting used to.
Thanks for all the answers.
