Nerve in your tooth

Can a nerve re grow when it has been taken out by the Dentist? I had a fall last year and smashed my front tooth exposing the nerve so it was removed and I had temporary filling stuff packed onto the end to create new tooth shape until I can afford a veneer.

Recently it has become very hot and cold sensitive but how can that be if there is not a nerve in it?

I don't know the answer daftpixie but will watch this thread with interest. I too have had a nerve removed and a temporary filling until I go back in May. My tooth is still very hot and cold sensitive.

If your nerve has been removed from your tooth,it cannot re-grow.When the dentist does root canal treatment on your tooth,they use reamers(which are like tiny drill bits)each one is slightly thicker than the next,so they work their way up to the biggest to make sure all the nerve & tissue inside your root canal has been removed.They will also take a small x-ray with a reamer in your tooth to check they have got right to the tip,so theoretically,no nerve should remain.Then the root canal is filled.The tooth is then a dead tooth,but will function the same way as a normal tooth,they are more brittle,as they have no blood supply & may darken in colour,but should not be sensitive.

I would pay a return visit to your dentist & explain how your tooth feels,as maybe there is residual nerve or tissue left inside the root canal and it may need to be re-reamed.

Thanks bex401. I am going back to the dentist in a few weeks for the job to be completed so will mention my worries to him.
