Thanks all.

I was thinking bough - but I'll blame it being lunchtime for brain being disengaged!!

Fought to me does not sound like fort, but maybe it does in the question setters local accent!

Just noticed that there is one more that I'm stuck on in the places section:

Hard rain on pig meat! in E Sussex 8 letters.

To me hard rain would be hail. Pig meat would be ham, pork or bacon.

But I'm not familiar wit places in E Sussex......
