There is an appeal on tv for funds for Sudan, and the doctor who is making the appeal tells us to text 70800 but he says 'text seventy eight hundred' - surely that would be 7800 and if anyone had trouble seeing the number on the screen they would text the wrong one. Or is it me?

It is a poor choice of words for the description as it can be interpreted in different valid ways. 78 * 800 or 70 + 800 etc..

Perhaps they beat off a lot of others to be allowed to say that ?
You haven't heard my accent!
three (shillings) and fourpence not three quarters. :-)
Should have said that 3/4 stands for three(shillings) and fourpence.
3/4 (d) was how it would be written on a price tag.
I'd say Seven Oh Eight Hundred
-- answer removed --
Seven Zero, Eight Double Zero.

I have a 0 in my Army number and when I used to read it out the Pay Corps Sergeant used to say that I shouldn't get paid as there is no such number as 'O'.
I learned to use zero every time after that!
Seven zero eight-hundred. I always use zero instead of nought.
It's to make the number more memorable. "Seventy, Eight-hundred" is a little more catchy and less of a mouth-full than "Seven, Zero, Eight, Zero, Zero". But granted, your point about the way the doctor delivers the number may not be the best. But then if he is a real doctor - rather than an actor - delivering lines to camera may not be his forte.
......and his handwriting isn't up to much!
