Phone HMRC.

You can register online. You will then be sent a Unique Tax Reference (UTR) number. If you are in construction your friend will need this number. Takes about 4 weeks to come through. Just invoice him after you get your UTR

You can't work for one unique person all the time and have self-employed status. Say, for an example, you are a cleaner -you can't work for just one person or one company you have to be available and willing to work for other clients. Its relatively easy to become self-employed -you can do it over the phone , they give you a UTR (unique Tax reference number) and yo will have to do your own Tax return each year.
You'd be entitled to unemployment pay - why not claim it? It's a bit steep for your parents to be supporting you (as surely they must be pensioners, if you are 51 as you say in earlier posts).
