Things To Do In Central London On A Sunday Afternoon

I'm going to London on Sunday with the Mrs as its her birthday, thought we might go to the Shard and then a show in the evening, Has anyone got any suggestions of things to do mid afternoon? Even a nice pub or somewhere to get something to eat that is not too pricey would be a help. Many thanks.

If you're in the London Bridge area you could do worse than the "Barrow Boy and Banker". It's a decent watering hole. South side of London Bridge on the west side of the road (the side away from Tower Bridge). Decent grub, Fuller's beers, a bit pricey for a pub (but most are in that area), plenty of seating. Opens noon to 6pm on Sundays:

you might do better to book the Shard in advance if the weather looks good; I think it's cheaper that way.

Dim sum in Chinatown for lunch (a bargain!) and then the V&A.

I've recommended Bistro 1 lots of times here (as have several others) for decent food at sensible prices and the feedback has always been positive. They've got 3 branches but I always use the Covent Garden one:

(If the weather's fine, simply watching the Covent Garden street entertainers - or the wonderful opera singers - can be fun. It's also free unless, of course, you choose to contribute something).

Otherwise, any of the South Kensington museums are well worth visiting. The Science Museum, the Natural History Museum and the V&A are all grouped closely together. They're all free.

A less well-known, but still fascinating museum, is the Museum of London Docklands. (Again, free!). It's close to West India Quay DLR station and next door to the classiest Wetherspoon's pub that you're ever likely to encounter.

The Science Museum has been 'changed' somehow and is now amazingly dull. When we tried to get in the Natural History museum during he summer there was a 2 1/2hour queue to get in.

Go down to the South Bank...there are always free things to see, and the National Theatre is the best in Britain, although I am unsure if there a plays on a Sunday.

What about Shakespeare's Globe, just s short walk downstream ? and Tate Modern, which again, is free ! Lots of Pubs on the river as well.

Don't forget St Pauls !...A wealth of things to do in our capital...the only problem you will have is deciding which to choose !

note that St Paul's and Westminster Abbey are not free. Museums and galleries are, though: National Gallery, V&A, British Museum and Tate Modern (not far from the Shard).
