Aluminium

Hello all. I have an aluminium shelving bookcase type thing in my kitchen. I decided today to take everything off it and give it a good clean. There is a sticky residue over one of the shelves that won't go. Tried everything...white wine vinegar, fairy, scraping it with my nails. Can anyone recommend how I can clean it? I live in Spain so don't have access to all the fab products I miss in the uk
