are some dvd recorders better quality than others regarding resolution & sound quality? I saw a sony one & it claims more more lines & a noise reduction feature. I was under the impression that the only difference between cheaper & expensive brands is build quality.

Are you talking about DVD recorder as part of a TV / VHS type setup, or a DVD recorder in a PC ?

I would imagine a DVD recorder as part of a TV setup could improve picture and sound quality if it was recording from the TV receiver within the DVD recorder itself.

If the DVD recorder had an freeview digital TV receiver built in rather than an analogue one you would get a better picture and sound.

obvoiusly u'd get a better recording from digital tv, but if u record digital tv on a sony dvd recorder for instance, would the quality be the same as if u record digital tv on a 'Goodmans' recorder for example?

The main point about recording to DVD is that the signal is processed and re-rendered as a compressed (mpeg) file. This takes time. With a better processor and better software, the compression can be optimized in terms of quality rather than speed. So, yes, quality of the final recording can vary enormously from the bottom of the range cheapo to a top of the rage, hi-spec machine.
