Internet Connection
3 Answers
I am using a laptop with windows8. Have just uninstalled McAfee & installed Malware bytes. Laptop has gone through the procedure and restarted & updated. Now I cannot get back on the net. Getting a message 'the proxy server isn't responding' check your proxy settings 127.0.0.1:14231 go to Tools>Internet Options>Connections. If you are on a LAN click LAN settings. Make sure your firewall settings aren't blocking your web access
I can get to the connection tab but I do not know if I am on LAN any help appreciated.

If you've only done that, you've left yourself with no anti-virus protection. (Malwarebyes Anti-Malware protects you against malware, which gets round almost all security suites, but it's not an anti-virus program). Consider installing Avast as well:
http:// www.ava st.com/ en-gb/i ndex
You've not told us which browser you're using but I'll assume that it's the (totally dire) Internet Explorer. (Why? Why? Why?). It's unlikely that you're connecting via a local area network (LAN) so I wouldn't expect the LAN settings to be relevant. However simply clicking on anything relevant and ensuring that 'No proxy' is selected wherever you have a relevant choice might fix your problem.
Alternatively, download the installation file for Firefox to the computer you're using to post here on AB:

Transfer it (via a USB pen drive or similar) to your laptop and install it. Then see if you can access the internet with Firefox. If you can't, go to Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Settings and check that 'No proxy' is selected.

Thank you Buenchico I found a tick near a proxy unticked it and it worked. I have downloaded Avast also. I agree Internet Explorer is crap. It is my DIL's new laptop and she was about to pay for Antivirus so saved her a few quid. For a youngster she is rubbish techno wise. It is also Windows8 and that is a nightmare. I am still on Xp on my laptop. I sent the original post from ipad. Thank you once again
