How can i make myself go to the gym? I've been a member for about a year now and go through phases of going and not going (mostly not going). It's a lot of money which i'm throwing down the drain by not going. I always get in and just feel like chilling out in front of the tv or feel too tired. Any ideas?

I joined 3 months ago and started going 3 or 4 times a week (mostly to try and get my money's worth!). I didn't think I would still be going now but after two months I could really see a difference in my body - a lot more toned and lost my tum!

Now I really look forward to going so I think, once you start seeing results it will encourage you to keep it up.

PS - I find it easier to go straight from work so I don't get settled into the couch and I can watch TC there anyway!

watch TV not TC!
I find if I miss a week, like I did 3 or 4 weeks ago, I dont go back for 6 months. I wanna go back, but now hav a pain in my back ....any excuse.

I find Cardiovascular stuff borin...prefer the weights. Get very lethargic when I aint been to gym for a while, so pumpin iron tends to sort this.

I find it hard to get motivated when u think it is ganna be borin..so Im ganna leave the Cardio stuff to riding me bike and just go to gym to pump iron, so I will be more motivated to go.

Maybe at the beginning of the week you could try writing what days your going to go in your diary or just make a new one. Try to stick to it and then keep referring back to it once you have gone.

You might be more likely to go if you see it in black and white than just telling yourself you'll go and by the end of the month you can look back and be very proud!

Whatevers best for you...everyones different

The trick with going to the gym...it's cut and dry...just get up and go. Push yourself. It takes work, but once you're in your car thats half the battle. Laziness is the worst sickness, and we all get it at some point, but it is curable. I love that NIKE slogan- "JUST DO IT!" xxcheers
Must you go after work? I find if I go lunch time, 5 sessions a week is easily achievable but after work I just don't feel like it. If you have to go after work go straight from work as suggested above. If at all possible though go lunch time it breaks up the day and gives you the evenings to feel all smug that you've done your work out. Also if you do an office job I find that at lunch I do Gym then eat I can almost feel my body absorbing the food into the muscles. I'm starving again by 5, I just feel the metabolism going 90 to the dozen in the afternoon, great feeling.
Prepare yourself for it the day before. Keep your music ready, your gym gear out or in your gym bag by the door. Make it a little more fun for yourself, like buy new CD's to try out at the gym- that usually works for me! Or buy new gym pants or something, anything to motivate yourself and feel like you are starting fresh....
Good luck!

JUST GO!!!!!

Its you and you alone stoping your self.. make YOUR health a priority... Live old and healthy.. go to the gym and sit down on a bike .. read a mag.. and drink some water.. then on another day.. do some more.. one day you will be doing so much you will have no idea how you lived with out it... baby steps sammd.. remember that... plan 3 days a week that you can start out going.. dont even plan it for certain days.. just make sure its 3... set YOUR goal and do it... nothing is stoping you... As for the tv.. you have less energy because your not being active.. if you can hit the gym or even go for a brisk walk at the start of the day .. you will notice you will have plenty or energy to last.. You can do it!!! I believe in you sammd... (thumbs up)

Now go out there and giver!!!!

My advice is to have an arrangement to meet someone and go together. It then becomes a pact and you support each other and won't want to let the other person down.

On the other hand it is a personal thing and you've got to want to do it for yourself, but as has already been said, if you miss a couple of times it's difficult to get back into the routine. Go with someone and it's more difficult to make that fatal break. Good luck.

Know the feeling sam and have been there myself. However I think the JUST DO IT advice is right. Maybe the wasted money aspect will motive you. If you decide that you will go twice a week, calculate the cost of each gym session and if you miss, fine yourself the cost. Put it in a jar and give it to charity at the end of the year. Paying twice for the same service might motivate you!! If you like listening to music take an Ipod or something, or a good book which you can read on the exercise bike.

Thanks guys, am gonna do it and aim for twice a week!

Hi sam,

take your partner or a friend with you. I know from my own experience that helps a big deal. I also prefer to go in the morning. It kickstarts the day and you feel wonderfully fresh and alert afterwards - and so full of virtue! For boring Cardio-stuff I take my favourite music with me and work the stairmaster with it. - almost like dancing. After the boring bit I reward myself with swimming, which I really like. If I have only little time I skip the cardio and weight and only go swimming.

hey!

ye i think definately take somone with you! and i told my friend to be 'p*ssed off' with me if i dont go and to make me go - well i dno this works for me. if your the competative type have a contest with somone, depending on what your doing (situps, running, wieghts) if you lose, dont beat urself up, js say to urself ull win next time - and if u win its amazing how u wanna go back and do it again!!

otherday for example me nd ma friend charlotte had a situps contest and i won!! the gyms closed for two weeks and i cant wait for it to open again so i can go back!!

have fun!!

one hundred and eleven situps (yes im showing off :D its pride)!!!
