is this a wind up?
LOL.
How many batteries were there in the clock, and did you take them all out ?

Also how long was "ages" ?

The circiut probably has a capacitor in it to smooth power supply, Capacitors store short term energy like a battery

ok its not a wind up (ha ha) the clock is a metamec 1960's sunburst design clock that takes a LR20 D battery. 'Ages' was more than five minutes -after that time I just wrapped it up to mail it . Hopefully it will stop ticking before it arrives at the Post office or you may see it been blown up on TV lol!
Some devices retain power for a few minutes for the purposes of changing batteries. eg. Sky remote
Have you ever met Uri Geller ?

Naughty Boy Old_Geezer this was a serious question ! I can't be going wrapping up ticking objects and presenting them at the Post Office ;-)
