My sweat stinks of ammonia. It first noticed it at the gym and thought it was because I was working out. Recently I was in a hot plantroom and the same thing happened. Why does this happen and is there anything I can do. I'm 45

Could well be indicative of kidney disorder but, extremely unlikely.
Not convinced that it is anything to do with exercise, diet or indeed underlying disease.
What can you do?..........not much.

To see whether it is actually your sweat containg ammonia or bacteria on your skin producing ammonia from your sweat, take a thorough shower with a bactericidal wash before you exercise. If there is a noticeable reduction in the ammonia smell then it is not you but bacteria to blame for the ammonia smell. An interesting (to some) side issue is that the 'ammonia' smell is not unique to a ammonia but is also produced by other airborne alkalis such as lime dust and cement dust.
lots of extra strength '48 hour' deoderants out there which are good, and you can get an aluminium paint to use on your pits if it is really bad that will stop you sweating loads if that is the issue. shower lots, wear cottons and natural fibre clothing and go and bug your gp for a solution.....it's what they get paid for ;-) x
