Can an Apple i-phone 4 really be unlocked or are all the websites offering "free" and "immediate" unlocking a scam? I have heard so many different stories about this process I don't know what to believe. Can this be done at mobile phone stores who offer an unlocking service and what is a fair price to pay?

Contact your carrier and request an unlock.

Thank you Ivor, that confirms what I was told earlier today
I had an iPhone unlocked nearly four years ago with no problems - used a stall in the local market (I know the technology has moved on but so must the 'unlockers' skills).

Thank you to you too, Sherrardk, I was worried that I might never get this phone unlocked but I will visit Birmingham Rag Market asap to get this done.

Thank you to all respondents to my question, my Apple I-phone was successfully unlocked by a very clever Asian lad and is working perfectly.
