Why is the expression "boots on the ground" so widely trendy today. I don't think it could really be called a euphemism; however what's wrong with saying something akin to "sending in the troops"? This is not a criticism of your question, sandy; it's just that your use of it gave me the opportunity to ask.

I think 'boots on the ground' is nice clear expression and unambiguous.
