I've managed to spill soup all over my duvet. The cover has gone straight into the washing machine but now the actual duvet has a large orange stain across it. Any ideas how to clean this? or is the best option going to be a trip to the dry cleaners?

Any suggestions willl be very much appreciated! x

Moral of the story- never attempt to eat tomato soup whilst helping to construct a shelving unit!!

Look at the cleaning instructions of the duvet.

If it can be machine washed this is obviously the first thing to do, if your washing machine is big enough.

If it can be machine washed, but you need to get it to the launderette, at least you know it can be wetted.

Do so - disolve your washing powder/liquid in warm water and sponge the stain down. Get as much out as you possibly can and take it to the launderette as soon as you can for a good wash.

If it is dry clean only, it should not be wetted. Blot as much as you can with paper towels. Take a clean tea towel (or similar cloth), wet it and wring out as much of the water as you can. Then lightly dab at the duvet. Get it dry cleaned as soon as you can.

I once had a similar problem with a mug of coffee but luckily it was summer time, so I soaked the duvet (a polyester one) in the bath in warm soapy water for a couple of hours because it was king size and too large for my washing machine. After rinsing it I draped it over a broomstick across the bath for several hours so the bulk of the water drained down the plughole. Then I lugged it into the garden and draped it flat over the suface of my Hills hoist to dry in the sunshine. It was a bit of a performance but dried perfectly. If only a small part of your duvet is affected, perhaps you could try washing only the affected part in the bath and then letting it dry in roughly the same manner.
If it is not a coloured Duvet. Dampen the stain and put talcum powder on it and allow to dry. This should lift the stain into the powder as it dries. Then just either hoover off or brush.
