Well, it was just after the end of the Second World war which I believe ended in Europe in May, and in the Pacific in August when the Atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Britain was bankrupt and full of bomb damage,housing was in short supply, rationing was still in place, everybody wore worn out clothing because clothes were rationed too, and everybody was worn down by six years of war. . All the troops in Europe were looking forward to being demobbed and sent home where they found their wives had been doing their jobs in their absence, and some of them were enjoying the independence it had given them and weren't prepared ro give it up. My friend was repatriated from Burma walking wounded arriving back at his home on 21 July 1945 for the first time in three years. Whilst he was away his wife had had an affair with a black American serviceman by whom she had a baby unknown to her husband. Seeing my friend unexpectedly walking up the garden path in total panic from a guilty conscience she shoved the baby out of sight into a bedroom wardrobe. There was a very happy and prolonged reunion downstairs and at some point my friend indicated that he was going to pop upstairs and change out of uniform. Unfortunately in order to find a shirt he opened the wardrobe in which the baby was lying. "Blimey" he cried "I thought I had left you in Burma !!!"

In 1945 I was in Germany. We had several Germans working on the base, amongst whom was a young German lady who had fractured English and with whom I used to chat as best we could. This was before the "no-fraternisation" rule, and one day she asked if I would like to come to tea and meet her parents who also had a bit of English. After tea her parents vanished into the kitchen, and during conversation the young lady said what sounded to me like "Would you like a kiss ?". My lucks in here, thinks I, getting all ready for passion as she came towards me. After a very embarrassing few moments I discovered the hard way that the German word for cushion is "kissen".

If you are anywhere near London, the easiest way to find this is to go to the British Newspaper Library. It is almost opposite Colindale underground station. There is no parking but you may be able to park on the nearby estate. You need to take two forms of identification to be given a reader's ticket. Some newspapers are on microfilm and some on paper. The newspapers of many other countries are also kept there.
