Why Do Double-Deck Buses Have External Handrails

on the outside of the front upstairs near side of the bus?
Bit of a strange question but I cannot see the point.

They are not handrails, they are branch deflectors to stop damage to windows and bodywork.

Oddly, I found myself thinking about the very same question only a few days ago but (possibly because I live in a semi-rural part of the country, with loads of overhanging trees) I managed to work out the answer for myself.

They're actually handrails, fitted for the benefit of recent arrivals from the Indian sub-continent to make them feel at home on public transport until they get used to our habit of riding on the inside.
Inclusivity at it's best.

If you look on a lot of HGV fridge trailers, they have a similar 'cage' to protect the fridge unit on the front of the trailer.
