when I was eating my dinner this evening, the broccoli I was about to cut turned out to be a caterpillar! I did notice in time but it put me right off and I'm not eating anything green for a long time. At least it was a whole one and not half of one. Do we eat many insects this way and not notice??

ytrewq, the reason I stopped eating broccoli many years ago was for exactly the same reason you have described, although I still eat the stalks but not the florets where creepy crawlies can hide.

I cut through a baked potato once from my Grandad's garden, and cut through a huge slug at the same time!! Bleurghhh! x
when buying broccoli always check in between the florets to make sure that there are no portions of yellow or brownish dark spots . those portions contain worms. broccoli is very rich in calcium and vitamin c so don't stop eating them. you can try frozen if you feel uncomfortable with the fresh. always make sure when buying broccoli, they are nice and firm and green.
i love broccoli sauted in lots of fresh garlic and ginger yum yum!
This happened to me with some blackberries. It's scary!
But surely you would wash all fruit and veg before cooking.? My mum alwas ised to soak her greens in slat water for a while before cooking them.
ewwwwww, thanks for that ," chucks the broccoli in the bin "
i bought a bag of salad from "not just any old food seller but the ridiculously expensive one" and washed it 3 times and when i piled it on my plate 3 snails fell out...one still living................yuk yuk yuk!!!!
..on avarage we swallow 8 spiders in our lifetime...and that's during our sleep ...so yes, I guess we probably do get through a few insects with our fruit and veg....
The comment from whiskeysheri reminded me of that old saying. 'There's only one thing worse than finding a worm in your apple and that's half a worm'. ugh.

What's wrong with a little caterpillar?
I can't remember the exact number, but the amount of spiders, flies, beetles and other crawly stuff we eat in our sleep, according to research, should put you off sleeping...
