Lets say if somebody drank every day habitually. How long would they have to go without alcohol in order to stop this. Lets say they could be sent to rehab how long would it take. Is just not drinking enough to over come the problem or is it therapy you also get in rehab?

It's not just the alcohol. I knew someone who spent more than a year in prison. The day he was released he was back drinking again.
People need to address the problems that make them turn to drink. AA is very good at helping drinkers who want to stop.
It's not advisable just to 'stop drinking' without professional support as a heavy drinker should have medication to counteract the withdrawal symptoms from alcohol.AA are always good for advice, different people have different reasons for drinking, and all addicts have different recovery times, some will always relapse.
It's different for different people. My old accountant was an alcoholic. He'd down a few bottles of vodka a day. Then just stop....he'd be off it for a year or so with no symptoms but would always fall off the wagon.

He said he was mentally addicted not physically. Alcohol numbed his pain.

Alcoholism is a matter of need...not want. So someone could an alcoholic if they only hand two drinks a day....but needed those drinks.
