Jaywick

My OH always went to Jaywick for his holidays (10 children, it was cheap). The place consisted of brick built bungalows with outside Elsan toilets that were emptied every morning (yuk!).
I thought they were only used in the summer and no one lived in them. The council installed proper toilets in the 1970's
I don't know if they were private or council owned, but it appears that they have now become permanent homes.

Butlins was at Clacton which is nearby. Dont knock the holiday for 10 kids they were lucky to get a holiday at all, it wouldn't really be a holiday for the parents with 10 still look after and feed, but at least they tried. Even getting there with that many kids must have been a nightmare.

They all went on a lorry or in a van! One year they actually went on a charabang.
The bungalows then (early 60's) were clean and looked after. I am sure they were, holiday homes only. Jaywick Sands were lovely, and his Dad and stepmother played bingo every night whilst the children played on the penny slots!
As Dee said, it was the only holiday they could afford. I went for the weekend once to stay with them, shared a bed with his sister, sand in the sheets!!
