Can anyone advise me what is the best way to access the internet when I am out on a canal boat where there are very few free wifi hotspots. We tried using a mobile phone which worked in some places, but not in the middle of nowhere. As I only need this access for a week's trip and a few weekends, I don't really want a contract dongle, but Pay as you go also only lasts for a month before the credit is lost. Any ideas?

If your mobile phone can't get a 3G signal a dongle won't. There are some places where you have to accept you can't get online unless you are using traditional wifi, via a router connected to the broadband service.

The phone got a signal, but the tablet took ages to download anything
Did it get a 3G signal?
"Broadband Everywhere" is a bit of a misnomer because you can't get it everywhere.

That is very expensive and is only available on contract.
